Avoiding no-shows: collection plans that work

Clear time windows, accurate item details and simple confirmations make free collections much more likely to happen.

Agree a realistic window

Avoid vague arrangements such as sometime tomorrow. Use a clear window that both people can manage, for example Saturday between 10:00 and 11:00.

Share practical details

Before collection, confirm:

  • The item's approximate size and weight
  • Whether stairs, narrow access or lifting are involved
  • Whether the collector needs a car or van
  • Whether parts can be separated for transport
  • How long the item can be held

Use the collection timer

The timer is not intended to punish genuine delays. It gives both members a clear point at which the item may be offered to somebody else. The giver can extend the deadline when communication is good.

Giving up is better than disappearing

A selected collector who can no longer attend should release the item promptly. That allows another interested member to be chosen and avoids wasting the giver's time.

Recording patterns fairly

One genuine mistake should not define a member. Repeated missed collections, however, are useful reliability information and may be reviewed by administrators.
