Decide whether it is suitable for reuse
Furniture should be structurally usable and reasonably clean. Photograph stains, tears, broken fittings or missing parts. Do not describe something as ready to use when it needs repair.
Measure more than the item
Record the width, depth and height of the furniture. Also consider doorways, stair turns, lifts, garden gates and parking restrictions that may affect removal.
Upholstered furniture
Labels and fire-safety requirements can matter for upholstered items. Do not remove safety labels. When unsure whether an upholstered product is appropriate to pass on, seek reliable guidance before listing it.
Plan the lifting
The giver is not automatically responsible for carrying an item. State clearly when the collector must bring help, tools, straps or a suitable vehicle.
If nobody can reuse it
Kirklees Council advises that bulky items that cannot be donated can be taken to an appropriate household waste recycling centre or booked through its bulky household collection service, subject to current rules and charges.
