How to write a listing people can trust

Good photographs, honest condition notes and useful measurements reduce questions and make collection easier.

Use a specific title

Wooden dining table, 140 cm is more useful than table free. Include the item type and one important detail.

Photograph the actual item

Use a clear, recent photograph in good light. Show the whole item and include visible damage rather than hiding it. Do not use a catalogue image as the only picture.

Describe condition honestly

Say what is working, what is worn and what is missing. Useful phrases include:

  • Used with light surface marks
  • One drawer runner sticks
  • Untested after storage
  • Requires two people to lift
  • Dismantled and ready to collect

Add measurements

Measurements are especially important for furniture, appliances, blinds, flooring, building materials and anything that must fit into a vehicle.

Remove personal data

Check drawers, pockets and storage devices. Reset smart products where possible and remove account links, saved Wi-Fi details, documents, labels and memory cards.

Make collection achievable

State any access restrictions before selection. A collector should know whether the item is upstairs, exceptionally heavy or unsuitable for a small vehicle.
